How to Make a Bed: Step-by-Step Bed Making Procedure Guide
Do you know how to make your bed? Surely, this question would sound laughable and frivolous to most people. However, I’ll say with some confidence that most persons don’t know how to make their beds, despite having done so frequently or almost daily.
For majority of people, making a bed means just a few steps: straightening or putting a bedsheet on the mattress and arranging pillows, placing blankets while removing any clutter such as books, cups and plates, toys or other stuff that could include anything from ashtrays to laptops.
Broadly speaking, yes, this would also qualify as making your bed. At least, it would pass off that you made your bed to parents or spouse or siblings.
However, you would be sleeping on the bed. Therefore, the question to ask here is: Have I made my bed properly to ensure a full rest and superb sleep? I’m sure most persons wouldn’t be able to respond affirmative to this question.
Importance of Making Your Bed
There’re two main reasons to make your bed;
- To give it a neat and clean look.
- Get comfortable sleep.
Unless you make your bed neat, clean and comfortable, chances are that you might not get much sleep.
How to Make Your Bed- Step by Step Guide
Therefore, to help you in the grand endeavor of making your bed, follow these simple steps.
Start with a clean bed
Remove any pillows, blankets, or comforters. Also remove any old sheets and pillowcases for washing. Unwashed or unclean pillows and blankets, comforters or fitted sheets will not give you proper rest and sleep that you deserve. Hence, try and ensure you use clean bed linen all the time you make your bed.
Place the fitted sheet
If you’re using a fitted sheet, place it on the mattress with the tags facing you. Make sure that the corners of the sheet with the corners of the mattress are aligned. Tuck in the fitted sheet from one corner to another by moving diagonally. Flatten wrinkles if any. Some persons use mattress protectors. If you’re one of them, place your mattress protector instead of a fitted sheet.
Put Your Bedsheet
This is the most important part of making your bed. The bedsheet comes in direct contact with your body, so it should always be clean and wrinkle-free for a good night's sleep. Start by placing the bedsheet on top of a fitted sheet. Fitted bedsheets are a great option because they stay in place, keeping your bed neat and comfortable throughout the night. Tuck the bedsheet's corners in diagonally from one end to the other of the mattress.
Place the comforter or duvet
If you’re using a comforter or duvet on your bed, place it over and spread. Smooth out the comforter or duvet. Slip the comforter or duvet over the edges of the bed. Later, tuck them in, under the bedsheet. After you’ve done this, roll back the comforter or duvet till it covers only about 2/3rds part of the bed and fold neatly.

Place the pillows
Place the pillows on top of the bedsheet. You could also place them on the comforter or duvet, if it isn’t folded by 2/3rds. Arrange the pillows in a decorative style to make the bed look superb, neat, clean and inviting. Take care to ensure that you fluff the pillows by dusting them.
Reasons to Make Your Bed Daily
Actually, there’re several reasons to make your bed daily, other than giving the bedroom a neat and tidy look. Understandably, you could be unaware of some of these reasons to make a bed. As I mention earlier, a freshly and properly made bed could help you get proper restful sleep.
Here’re some more reasons to make your bed daily.
- Eliminating Allergens: If you’re allergic to various things or suffering from allergic rhinitis, making your bed could help alleviate the symptoms. That’s because dust, pollen, pet dander and dead skin cells from our bodies generally remain on the bed and bedsheet. These can trigger severe allergies alone or through dust mites.
- Prevents Depression: Studies reveal that women or men and even kids that sleep on untidy beds are prone to suffering stress and depression. This could be happening due to lack of proper rest and sleep due to sleeping on an uncomfortable bed. The link between good sleep and mental health is well-established by medical science. You can prevent depression by simply making your bed daily.
- Detecting bugs and insects: Often, bedbugs and other insects such as silverfish and cockroach breed in and under beds that aren’t made regularly. These insects can play havoc with your sleep and also trigger various allergies and sicknesses. When you make your bed daily, it’s easy to detect such pests and take steps to eradicate them.
- Avoiding Skin Diseases: Sleeping or reclining on washed and clean sheets can help protect you against skin disease such as ringworms and scabies, to name a few. This is particularly true if more than one person is using the bed during the day. Elements such as sweat that’s absorbed by the mattress can breed skin disease causing fungi which leads to ringworm and pathogens that cause scabies.
Hence, it’s vital to make your bed daily. If that’s not really possible for any reasons, you could try finding help to make your bed. Or, you could make your bed at least thrice a week to benefit from good sleep and superb health. These efforts would surely prove worthwhile and save a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on medicines.
Conclusion
Before concluding I will add that making your bed can be counted among one of the life skills for humans. If you’re a parent, start training your children on how to make their beds and make it a daily habit. It’s important to make our bed daily, as I have written above and highlighted with dangers of neglecting this vital task.
Making your bed doesn’t take much time. It’s simple and easy. It requires only some effort and the will to exert those efforts daily. Some persons make their beds once daily, after they awake from sleep. However, best practices demand that you make your bed twice- after waking and before sleep.
